Chapter 2: It's Done

I sat on the kitchen floor for a long time after he left.
Forty-seven times.
Someone had walked into my home forty-seven times without me knowing.
I pulled up the log again and scrolled through every date.
My hands wouldn't stop shaking.
Then I noticed something that made my stomach drop.
The third fingerprint had last been used at 3:09 in the morning.
Eight minutes before the police called me.
I stood up slowly and walked to the bedroom doorway.
Everything looked the same.
The pillow.
The blanket folded back on his side.
The glass of water on the nightstand.
Then I saw it.
Under the edge of the bed.
A small black bag I had never seen before.
Inside was a phone.
Not Christopher's usual phone.
A second one.
Older.
Pre-paid.
The last message sent read:
*"It's done.
She didn't wake up."*
I dropped it.
I heard the front door open.
Christopher was back.
He said he had forgotten his jacket.
He stepped into the hallway and looked at me standing there, holding that phone, unable to speak.
His expression didn't change.

That was the most terrifying part.
He wasn't surprised at all.
