Chapter 10: What My Father Built

I sat in my car in that parking lot for four minutes.
I know because I watched the clock.
Then I called Gerald Marsh.
"Dennis Falk," I said.
"My father was a partner in his firm."
A silence that told me Gerald already knew.
"Gerald."
"Yes," he said.
"He was.
A silent partner.
He invested a significant sum approximately fifteen years ago.
He never told your mother." A pause.
"He told me two years before he died.
He was trying to find a way to unwind the partnership without drawing attention to it."
"Why?"
"Because by then he understood what Falk was using the firm for." Gerald's voice was careful and steady.
"The firm is legitimate on its surface.
Asset management, estate planning.
But Falk has been using a portion of the client accounts to run money through a series of shell companies.
Your father discovered this approximately four years into the partnership.
He tried to exit quietly.
Falk refused to release him."
"And Julian knew."
"Julian introduced your father to Falk.
That was how it began." Gerald paused.
"Julian was the bridge between them.
He brought your father in, and when your father wanted out, Julian became the mechanism Falk used to keep him in.
The payments your father made to Julian — some of that money went back to Falk.
It was a closed loop, Valerie.
Your father was trapped in it."
I looked through the windshield at the precinct entrance.
"My father wasn't extorted," I said slowly.
"He was caught.
And Julian was the one who caught him."
"That is closer to the truth, yes." Gerald's voice was quiet.
"He was not a dishonest man.
He made one trusting mistake and spent twelve years paying for it.
Everything he did afterward — the records, the letter, the affidavit — was his attempt to give you the tools to end it cleanly, without destroying his name."
I thought about my father's letter.
*I kept records instead.
Every payment.
Every date.*
He hadn't been documenting Julian's crimes.
He had been documenting his own entanglement, and Julian's role in it, and the path out of it.
He had been building a case not just against Julian but for himself.
Proof that he had been manipulated.
Proof that he had tried to get out.
"The recording," I said.
"Julian threatening my career.
That wasn't just about the money."
"No," Gerald said.
"If your father had gone to authorities about Falk's firm, Julian's role as the intermediary would have come out.
Julian needed your father silent.
And he used you to keep him that way."
My father had stayed quiet for twelve years to protect my career.
Julian had known that and used it deliberately.
I got out of the car.
Diane was waiting near the entrance.
She read my face and didn't ask.
"Falk," I said.
"We need to go to Falk before Julian can reach him again."
"Already ahead of you." She held up her phone.
"I've been on with a contact at the FBI field office in Quantico for the last twenty minutes.
The moment I mentioned shell companies and asset movement, they got very interested very fast." She paused.
"They want to talk to you today, Val.
And they want everything in that folder."

I thought about my father sitting in his study under that lamp, building his careful case, waiting for a moment he never lived to see.
"Let's go," I said.
