Chapter 2: The Room He Never Opened

Roman didn't answer Marco right away.

He was staring at the doorway Celeste had walked through four weeks ago, as if some part of him still expected her to come back through it.

"No," he finally said.

Marco didn't move.

"Boss—"

"I said no."

Silence.

Then Marco set something on the desk.

A photograph.

Printed, not digital.

The kind someone leaves behind on purpose.

Roman looked down at it.

It was a room inside the penthouse.

A room he had never opened.

The locked door at the end of the east corridor that Celeste had once told him was storage.

In the photograph, it wasn't storage.

It was a nursery.

Pale yellow walls.

A white crib assembled in the corner.

A small shelf of books.

A folded blanket with the letter E stitched into the corner.

Roman's throat tightened.

"Where did you get this?"

"It was on your desk this morning," Marco said quietly.

"Someone left it here.

Someone who has access to this building."

Roman turned the photograph over.

On the back, in handwriting he didn't recognize, were six words.

*She knew you'd never find her.*

Roman stood very still.

"That's not Celeste's handwriting," he said.

Marco nodded slowly.

"I know."
