His voice was shaking.
"What did you do?"
I kept my voice calm.
"I protected what was mine, Daniel."
"You can't freeze those accounts.
Half of that money is—"
"Not yours," I said.
"It never was."
I heard Chloe in the background.
"What's happening?
Daniel, what's wrong?"
He covered the phone, but I still heard him say: "She knew.
She knew the whole time."
I let the silence sit for a moment.
Then I said, "The fraud team flagged forty-one transactions this morning.
The board has already been notified.
Your name is on every single one."
A long pause.
"Audrey, listen to me.
We can talk about this.
I can explain—"
"You had three years to explain.
You chose Chloe instead."
Then he said something that stopped me cold.
"You don't understand what you're about to uncover.
There are people involved in this who are not going to let you just walk away."
My hand tightened around the phone.
"What people, Daniel?"
He didn't answer.
The line went d*ad.
I sat there staring at the wall.
The accounts were frozen.
The documents were safe.
The board knew.
But Daniel's last words wouldn't leave me alone.
