Chapter 2: The Woman With Red Eyes

Standing on my porch was an elderly woman I had never seen before.
She was holding a single sunflower.
Her eyes were red, like she'd been crying for a long time before she ever knocked.
"Are you Margaret?" she asked softly.
I nodded, unable to speak.
"I'm Ruth.
Danny was my son."
The world tilted.
I grabbed the doorframe to keep from falling.
She reached into her coat and pulled out a small envelope.
"He wrote this the summer before he d*ed.
He made me promise to deliver it on your sixtieth birthday.
He made me swear."
My voice came out as a whisper.
"He told you about the sunflowers?"
"He told me everything." Her chin trembled.
"He loved you his whole short life."
I stepped back and let her in.
We sat at the kitchen table together — the same table where the note was still lying open.
Ruth looked at it and went very still.
"There's something else," she said quietly.
"Something I wasn't sure I should tell you."
She reached into her bag and placed a photograph on the table between us.
I looked down.
My breath stopped.
The photo showed Danny — but he wasn't alone.
Standing beside him was someone I recognized immediately.
Someone I had known for years.
Someone who had never once mentioned his name to me.
