Chapter 3: What Was in the Cup

Gabriel came back into the bedroom and closed the door.

He didn't sit down.

"The preliminary screen flagged two compounds," he said.

"One is a sedative — low dose, cumulative.

The kind that doesn't show up unless you're specifically looking for it.

The other one is harder to identify without a full panel."

Adrian was very still.

"How long before we have the full panel?"

"Six hours.

Maybe less if I push the contact."

"Push."

Gabriel nodded once and typed something into his phone.

Hannah stood near the window with Lily pressed against her shoulder.

She hadn't moved since Gabriel started speaking.

Her eyes were fixed on the floor at a point that wasn't really the floor.

"Hannah."

She looked up.

"Did Dominic ever come into the staff apartment when you weren't there?"

"I — I don't know.

I work nights sometimes.

Lily stays with Mrs.

Ricci when I do."

"Does Mrs.

Ricci lock the apartment?"

"I assumed—" She stopped.

"I don't know."

Adrian looked at Gabriel.

"Find out who has keys to the staff wing."

"Already on my list."

Lily had been quiet through all of it, sitting on the edge of the bed with her rabbit in her lap.

She was watching Gabriel the way children watch strangers — not with fear, but with the particular attention of someone deciding whether a person is safe.

"Are you going to fix it?" she asked him.

Gabriel looked at her.

"Fix what?"

"The bad drops."

He crouched down so he was at her level.

It was the kind of thing that looked awkward on a man like Gabriel Vale, a man built like a door and accustomed to rooms that went quiet when he entered.

"Yeah," he said.

"That's what we're doing."

Lily considered this.

Then she held out her rabbit.

"You can hold Chester if you want.

He helps."

Gabriel looked at the rabbit.

Then at Adrian.

Adrian's expression said: do not make this strange.

Gabriel accepted the rabbit.

He held it with both hands like a man who had never held a stuffed animal and was determined not to drop it.

"Thank you," he said.

"You're welcome," said Lily.

Adrian turned back to the window.

The city below was already moving — morning traffic, delivery trucks, the ordinary machinery of a world that had no idea what was happening in this room.

Three years.

He turned the number over in his mind the way you turn a stone over to see what lives underneath.

Three years of trembling hands.

Three years of missed details, slow reactions, decisions he'd made in a fog and later couldn't fully reconstruct.

Three years of Dominic stepping forward at exactly the right moment, always helpful, always patient, always there with the tea.

"He was careful," Adrian said, not to anyone in particular.

"Very," Gabriel agreed.

"Whoever advised him on the dosage knew what they were doing.

Enough to impair.

Not enough to hospitalize.

Not enough to trigger a formal medical investigation."

"Someone helped him."

"Yes."

"I want to know who."

"I know you do."

The room was quiet for a moment.

Then Hannah spoke, and her voice was barely above a whisper.

"Mr.

Moretti.

About a week ago, Dominic stopped me in the hallway.

He asked me how Lily was sleeping.

Whether she ever woke up at night." She paused.

"I thought it was just conversation.

He seemed — interested in her."

The air in the room changed.

Adrian turned from the window.

"What exactly did he say?"

"He said children that age sometimes have trouble sleeping.

He said if she ever had trouble, he knew someone who could help.

A doctor he trusted." Her arms tightened around Lily.

"I thanked him and said she slept fine."

Gabriel stood up slowly.

He set Chester back in Lily's lap with more care than the situation probably required.

"Adrian."

"I heard her."

"He was checking whether the child was a problem."

The word landed in the room like something dropped from a height.

Adrian's phone buzzed on the desk.

He looked at the screen.

It was a message from Dominic.

*Good morning.

Bringing your tea up in twenty minutes.

Don't start the Caruso call without me.*

Adrian set the phone face-down on the desk.

"Gabriel.

I need Dominic in this house and believing nothing has changed.

Can you do that?"

"Yes."

"And I need Hannah and Lily somewhere he cannot reach them."

Gabriel was already moving toward the door.

May you like

"I know a place," he said.

"He's never heard of it."
