Chapter 2: The Woman With the Cold Smile

Vivian paused just long enough to make Claire's stomach drop.
"His name is Gabriel Varrick.
That's all I can tell you over the phone."
Claire knew the name.
Everyone in New York knew the name.
You didn't say it loudly in certain neighborhoods.
You didn't ask questions about it in certain rooms.
Her hands were shaking when she picked up her coat.
The penthouse was everything she expected and nothing she was prepared for.
Two guards at the elevator.
Another at the bedroom door.
The kind of silence that money buys and grief deepens.
Then she saw Lily.
The little girl was so small.
So still.
Claire had worked with traumatized children before, but this was different.
Lily wasn't hiding.

She had simply gone somewhere inside herself and pulled the door shut behind her.
Claire sat on the edge of the bed and didn't speak.
