Chapter 2: What She Carried in That Bag

Samantha stood up slowly.

She didn't raise her voice.

She didn't have to.

"His name is Leo.

He graduated with honors this morning.

And those boots belonged to his father."

Higgins blinked.

"That's not the point.

The dress code—"

"His father wore those boots on his last deployment." Her voice didn't shake.

"He didn't come home.

Leo has worn them every important day since he was fourteen.

So no, Mr.

Higgins.

They're not coming off."

The room had gone quiet.

Parents were turning around.

A few teachers near the door had stopped moving.

Higgins straightened his jacket.

"Rules are rules.

If he can't comply, he waits outside until—"

"Where did you get that?" he said quietly.

Samantha didn't answer him.

She looked at me instead.

"Mama," she said.

"I think it's time."
