Chapter 2: The Name That Changed Everything

Victoria's laugh died in her throat.

Vance didn't look at her.

He was still looking at Maya.

"Where did you get this?" he asked quietly.

Maya's voice was barely a whisper.

"It was with me when they found me.

I was four years old.

It's the only thing I've ever had."

Vance closed his eyes for a moment.

When he opened them, something had changed in his face.

Not anger.

Something deeper.

Something that looked almost like grief.

"I know whose medal this is," he said.

He turned slowly to face the room.

"Twenty-four years ago, a decorated general disappeared with his family during a classified operation.

His wife.

His infant daughter." He paused.

"They were never found."

The ballroom was completely still.

"The general's name," Vance continued, "was Richard Hargrove."

Victoria went white.

Because everyone in that room knew that name.

Richard Hargrove had been the most powerful military figure in the country.

His estate alone was worth hundreds of millions.

And he had no known heirs.

Maya stared at Vance.

"I don't understand."

He looked at her gently.

"I think you do, child."

Victoria took one step backward.

Then her husband — the man who had stayed silent all evening — grabbed her arm.

His face was ash.

"Mother," he whispered.

"Did you know?"
