Chapter 2: He Raised His Hands

The player signed slowly, clearly, making sure Andrea caught every word.
"I see you.
Your sign is beautiful.
Don't let anyone take your joy."
Andrea burst into tears.
Not sad tears.
The kind that come when someone sees you — really sees you — in a place you never expected.
Then he turned to face the woman directly.
He didn't shout.
He didn't need to.
He pointed at Andrea, then pointed at the torn sign still in her hands, then looked straight at the woman and shook his head slowly.
Once.
Twice.
The entire section had gone quiet.
Someone behind us whispered, "Is he really—"
"He is," the man next to them said.
"His younger brother is deaf."
The woman opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Her son had stopped laughing.
Then the player waved toward the dugout.
A staff member jogged over, leaned in, and listened.
The player pointed at Andrea again.
The staff member nodded and looked directly at us.
Then he looked at the woman and said something I couldn't hear — but her face told me everything.
She grabbed her bag.
Her son grabbed his jacket.
But before she could stand up, the man in the row ahead turned around and said quietly:
"I filmed the whole thing."
