Chapter 2: What Was Inside the Box

Part 2 ⬇️
Inside the lunchbox were photographs.
Dozens of them.
Printed clearly, dated, and arranged in order.
I caught a glimpse before the man slammed the lid shut with both hands — but not fast enough.
I'd already seen his face in them.
And the uniform he was wearing.
"Where did you get these?" he hissed.
The elderly woman didn't flinch.
"I've been carrying those for eleven years," she said quietly.
"Waiting for the right moment."
His wife grabbed his arm.

One name was already on the screen, ready to call.
Gerald went completely still.
"Don't," he whispered.
"Please.
My family—"
"Sit down," she said, nodding toward the wheelchair space.
"Move your wife's bag.
Let this boy have his seat."
Gerald didn't move for a long moment.
Then Caleb spoke.
"Mom…
do you know who she is?"
I looked at the elderly woman.
And for the first time, I noticed the small pin on her cardigan.
My breath caught.

What Caleb saw on that pin — and who this woman really is — changes everything.
