Chapter 2: He Said It Was Handled

Nobody moved.
The woman on the porch stared at the babies.
Alaric stared at the floor.
And I stood there holding the door, waiting for someone to tell me I was losing my mind.
"Who are you?" I asked.
She looked at Alaric instead of me.
"You said it was handled."
"It is," he said quietly.
"Just give me a minute."
"A minute?" Her voice cracked.
"Alaric, we had an agreement."
I stepped forward.
"What agreement?"
She finally looked at me — really looked at me — and something shifted in her face.
Not guilt.
Something colder.
"He didn't tell you about me."
It wasn't a question.
I turned to Alaric.
He was still staring at the floor.
"Tell me about her," I said.
"Right now."
He said nothing.
The woman pulled out her phone.
She turned the screen toward me.
It was a photo of her and Alaric.
A restaurant.
Candles.
His hand covering hers.
The date in the corner was four months ago.
Four months ago, I was seven months pregnant.
"We've been together for two years," she said.
"He told me you two were done.
That the babies would live with him — with us — once they were born."
My back hit the wall.
Behind me, Grace started to cry.
Then Alaric finally spoke.
"Nevaeh, there's something else you don't know yet."
