Chapter 2: The Folder I Never Opened in Front of Him

**PART 2**

I didn't cry.

I didn't shout.

I went back upstairs, got dressed, and made one phone call.

Not to my mother.

Not to a friend.

To Daniel Marsh — the attorney I had quietly retained six weeks before Christopher even stepped off the plane.

Because I hadn't been waiting for him to come home.

I had been waiting for him to make his first mistake in front of me.

Christopher looked surprised.

"Where are you going?"

"Out," I said.

Careful.

"I really am sorry," she said.

"I never wanted things to be like this."

I looked at her for a long moment.

"I know exactly what you wanted," I said.

"And I know exactly what he promised you."

Her smile didn't move.

But her eyes did.

That told me everything.

What she didn't know — what neither of them knew — was that I had already spoken to someone else.

Someone who had worked inside Pinnacle Crest Group for eleven years.

Someone who had watched everything happen from the inside.

And three days earlier, that person had sent me a folder.

I hadn't opened it in front of Christopher.

But I had read every single page.

What was inside that folder — and who sent it to Lorelei?
