Chapter 2: The Girl in the Maternity Ward

The door flew open.
David stood in the frame, pale and breathless.
"Don't tell her anything else."
The doctor didn't move.
Neither did I.
"David." My voice came out flat.
"Who is Grace's mother?"
He looked at the floor.
"It's complicated."
"She has my DNA." I held up the folder.
"How is that complicated?"
He crossed the room and tried to take my hand.
I pulled away.
"There's a girl," he said quietly.
"She's very young.
She came to me months ago.
She had nowhere to go."
"What girl?
Who is she?"
He wouldn't look at me.
"David.
Who is she?"
When he finally raised his eyes, I already knew something was wrong.
Not just wrong.
Something I wasn't prepared for.
"She said she was yours," he whispered.
"From before we met."
The room went completely still.
"I don't have a daughter from before we met."
"She had documents.
A name.
Dates.
She knew things about you that no stranger could know."
My chest tightened.
"Where is she now?"
David's jaw worked silently for a moment.
"She's in the maternity ward.
But she's asking to leave.
Tonight."
"Without Grace?"
He nodded.
I stood up so fast the chair scraped back.
"Take me to her.
Right now."
