Chapter 2: The Name in the Hallway

**PART 2**

Lucas stared at him.

"Sir…

are you sure?

Mrs.

Mercer will—"

"Mrs.

Mercer will know nothing until it is too late," Jonathan said.

"Can you make that call without her finding out?"

Lucas was quiet for a moment.

Then he nodded slowly.

The attorney arrived before sunrise.

Jonathan's hand trembled as he signed, but his eyes were steady.

When it was done, he asked Lucas to stay.

"There's something else," Jonathan rasped.

"In my jacket pocket.

The inside left.

Bring it to me."

Lucas retrieved a small folded envelope.

Inside was a USB drive.

"I've been recording this room for three days," Jonathan said.

"Every word she said tonight is on there.

Her voice.

Her confession.

All of it."

Lucas went pale.

"Mr.

Mercer…

that means she—"

"Yes," Jonathan said quietly.

"It does."

Lucas looked toward the door, then back at Jonathan.

His voice dropped to almost nothing.

"She was here an hour ago.

She spoke to someone in the hallway.

I didn't hear everything…

but I heard a name."

Jonathan's eyes sharpened.

"What name?"

Lucas hesitated.

"Lucas." Jonathan's grip tightened around the young man's wrist.

"What name did you hear?"

Lucas swallowed hard.

"She said…

*Dr.

Hale*."

The room went very still.

Because Dr.

Hale was the cardiologist who had given Jonathan five days to live.
