Chapter 2: The Woman at the Door

**PART 2**
I didn't sleep that night.
I sat on the edge of my bed in that small Franklinton apartment, staring at the black card in my hands.
Six million dollars.
From a twelve-year-old boy.
Where had Noah gotten that kind of money?
And why had he hidden it from Ellis?
The next morning, a second message came from the same unknown number.
"Mom, don't use the card yet.
They're watching your accounts.
Ellis doesn't know about this money.
If he finds out, it won't be safe for either of us."
My hands went cold.
*They're watching.* Who was watching?
And what had my son gotten himself into?
I tried calling the number back.
No answer.
I tried again.
Nothing.
Then, three days later, a woman knocked on my apartment door.
She was well-dressed, calm, and she looked at me like she already knew everything about my life.
"Mrs.
Chappell," she said quietly.
"My name isn't important right now.
What's important is that your son contacted us six months ago.
He came to us on his own."
"What do you mean he came to you?" I whispered.
"He's twelve years old."
She didn't flinch.
"He came to us because he found something in his father's office.
Something Ellis has been hiding for years." She paused.
"And Noah has been protecting you ever since."
My legs nearly gave out beneath me.
"Where is my son?" I asked.
"Is he safe?"
She looked at me for a long moment before she answered.
And what she said next stopped my heart completely.
