Chapter 2: The Envelope He Wasn't Supposed to See

Charles answered the call.

I watched him through the open doorway, still on my knees on the porch, one hand pressed against my stomach.

His face changed the moment he heard the voice on the other end.

The confidence drained out of him like water through a crack.

"What do you mean it's frozen?" he said.

"All of it?"

Courtney stepped closer to him.

"Charles?

He ended the call without another word.

Courtney grabbed his arm.

"Charles, talk to me."

He didn't answer her.

He was still staring at me.

"Lucas knew," I said quietly.

"He knew exactly what you were capable of."

Charles took one step toward the door.

The police cruiser turned onto our street.

A woman stepped out holding a sealed envelope.

Charles went completely still.
