Chapter 1: The Morning They Left Me Behind

After my accident, my husband let his mother pack his bags and say, "My son didn't sign up for this" — the next morning, they both banged on my door, shouting, "How dare you do this to us?!"

Before the crash, I truly believed David and I had a strong marriage.

He seemed like the devoted husband, the loving father, the man who would stand by me no matter what.

Then a drunk driver hit me.

Two days later, I was sent home with a broken leg, fractured ribs, and strict orders to stay in bed.

I could barely move.

I needed help with everything, especially caring for our four-year-old daughter.

Instead of stepping up, David called his mother.

Eleanor had never liked me.

She didn't arrive with food, medicine, or any intention of helping.

She came with designer suitcases.

From my bed, I watched her calmly pack David's clothes while he stood in the doorway, refusing to meet my eyes.

I finally asked how he could possibly leave his injured wife and child.

Eleanor zipped the suitcase shut.

"My son didn't sign up for this," she said coldly.

"He has an important career.

He'll come back when you're functional."

I looked at David, waiting for him to disagree.

He didn't.

He kissed my forehead and whispered, "Sorry, babe, it's just too stressful right now."

Then he walked out.

I was hurt, furious, and completely stunned.

But the moment I watched him leave our daughter behind too, something inside me shifted.

They thought I was too helpless to do anything.

They were wrong.

As soon as their car disappeared, I made one decision.

The next morning, my security app sent me an alert.

David and Eleanor were back.

David was pulling at the locked door while Eleanor pounded on it, both of them looking pale and frantic.

Then she leaned toward the camera and shouted,

"How dare you do this to us?!"
