Chapter 1: The Eyes That Should Not Exist

After I gave birth, I brought my baby to meet the grandpa who raised me — but the moment he saw her face, he burst into tears and said, "This is impossible.
You have no idea what you've done."
My grandpa was the only father I ever had after my parents died in a car crash.
So when I got pregnant at 27 and the man I loved disappeared the same night I told him, Grandpa was the one who kept me from falling apart.
He had never met Caleb.
I had repeatedly postponed introducing them, convinced there would be plenty of time once our relationship became more serious.
But when Caleb vanished without even saying goodbye, part of me was relieved that their paths had never crossed.
"Bring that little baby into the world, sweetheart," Grandpa said, wrapping his hand around mine.
"Whatever happens, we'll face it together."
And he meant every word.
He built Nora's crib with his own hands, drove me to every appointment, and wept with joy when the doctor told us I was carrying a girl.
Then the delivery went terribly wrong.
What should have been two days in the hospital turned into almost two weeks as my tiny daughter fought to survive.
But from the first moment I held Nora, I saw Caleb in every part of her face.
His dark curls.
The little cleft in his chin.
Even his unusual eyes — one bright blue and the other such a deep brown that it looked almost black.
When the doctors finally allowed me to take Nora home, I drove straight to Grandpa's house.
He was seated on the porch when my car pulled into the driveway.
The instant he saw us, he sprang to his feet so quickly that his coffee spilled across the steps.
"There are my girls!" he cried.
I carefully placed Nora in his arms.
His smile vanished.
Grandpa stared at one of her eyes, then the other.
Within seconds, all the color drained from his face.
"Grandpa?
What's wrong?"
His hands began to tremble beneath Nora's blanket.
"Who is this baby's father?"
The question caught me off guard.
"What do you mean?"
"The man you were seeing," he said urgently.
"What was his name?"
"Caleb.
Why are you asking me this?"
Grandpa looked at me with an expression I had never seen before — a mixture of horror, grief, and disbelief.
"Oh God," he whispered.
"You don't understand what you've done.
Why didn't you ever tell me who he was?"
He pulled Nora closer and kept staring at her eyes as though he were holding a ghost.
Terrifying possibilities raced through my mind.
"Grandpa, you're scaring me.
What are you talking about?"
He closed his eyes.
When he opened them again, tears were streaming down his cheeks.
"I was never supposed to tell you the truth," he said.
"Your mother made me promise I would take it to my grave."
My entire body went cold.
"But after the mistake you made without even knowing it…
I have no choice anymore."
