Chapter 2: Something I Found Out Yesterday
I walked back to the room before he turned around.
I lay down, pulled Noah against my chest, and stared at the ceiling.
I didn't sleep.
When Brandon came in, he didn't say anything.
He sat in the chair by the window and watched us in the dark.
I kept my eyes closed and my breathing even.
In the morning, my sister called to check on Noah.
I stepped into the bathroom to answer, and when I came back out, Brandon was on the phone again.
"She can't handle it right now, Mom.
Just let me do this my way."
I stood in the doorway.
He saw me and lowered the phone.
"I was going to tell you this morning."
"Then tell me."
He set the phone face-down on the chair.
"I called a lawyer two days ago."
The room went very quiet.
"What kind of lawyer, Brandon?"
He didn't answer right away.
He looked at Noah in my arms, then back at me.
"She's been threatening to cut us off completely.
The house, the loan, everything.
She said if I don't—"
His phone lit up on the chair.
Kimberly's name on the screen.
He reached for it.
"Don't you dare," I said.
He stopped.
And in that silence, Noah made a small sound — not crying, just a breath — and Brandon's face did something I hadn't seen in four days.
It broke.
"I haven't agreed to anything," he said quietly.
"But there's something else.
Something I found out yesterday that you don't know yet."
