Chapter 2: The Account in Her Name

I stopped bouncing Iris and looked my mother straight in the eye.
“Lower your voice.
You frightened my daughter.”
“Your daughter?” Diane snapped.
“What about Rachel’s children?
They were counting on that money.”
“No.
You were counting on it.”
Her face tightened.
“Send the $3,000, Elena, and we can forget this shameful behavior.”
I carried Iris to her bassinet, then opened the locked drawer beside it.
My hands were trembling, but not from fear.
I removed a thick blue folder and placed it on the table.
“What is that?” Diane demanded.
“Ten years of bank statements.
Every payment I made for Rachel’s rent, debts, vacations, and children.
It totals $84,600.”
Diane’s polished finger froze above the folder.
“And this,” I said, pulling out a sealed document, “ends every automatic transfer today.”
“You ungrateful little—”
Her voice vanished when I opened the final statement.
One account was highlighted in red.
“That account isn’t Rachel’s,” I said.
“It’s yours.”
Diane went pale and reached for the page, but I pulled it away.
Then my phone rang.
Rachel’s name appeared on the screen.
I answered on speaker.
“Elena,” Rachel whispered, “before Mom lies to you again, there’s something you need to know about all that money…”
