Chapter 6: The First Morning Victoria Stopped Smiling

The lawyer's name was Carol Reyes.

She had a small office above a dry-cleaning shop, with diplomas on the wall and a desk stacked in organized towers of folders.

She shook my hand, offered nothing unnecessary, and got straight to it.

"Walk me through everything.

Start with the first time you had a concern about your mother-in-law and end with last night."

I talked for forty minutes.

Carol took notes and didn't interrupt except to ask for clarification on dates and names.

When I finished, she set her pen down.

"You have the photographs?"

"Yes."

"The recording from your coat pocket?"

"Three copies.

Cloud, USB, and my sister's email."

"Your sister's recording of Julian's call?"

"Same."

"The pediatrician has filed the mandatory report?"

"Yesterday afternoon."

Carol leaned back in her chair.

"You've done almost everything right.

The one thing I want you to do today — before anything else — is write a detailed timeline.

Every incident you can remember involving Victoria and Elena.

Dates, what was said, who was present.

Even the small things.

The comments about her weight.

The time you asked her to stop.

All of it."

"Okay."

"The pattern matters as much as the incident.

One bad afternoon is a mistake.

A documented pattern is a course of conduct."

She picked up her pen again.

"Now.

Your husband.

You want to address the marriage as well?"

"I want to protect Elena first.

Everything else follows from that."

"Understood.

But I need you to understand that Julian's call to your sister — where he threatened to characterize you as an unfit mother — that is relevant to custody.

That recording is significant."

"I know."

"He may not realize your sister recorded it."

"He doesn't know she does that."

A small pause.

"Good.

Don't tell him."

She walked me through the next steps — a formal response to the CPS investigation, a petition for an emergency custody arrangement, a letter to Victoria's attorney establishing that we were represented and that all future contact should go through Carol's office.

I signed three documents before I left.

On the sidewalk outside, Diane squeezed my arm.

"How do you feel?"

"Like something has started that can't be stopped."

"Is that good or bad?"

"I don't know yet."

My phone buzzed.

A text from a number I now recognized as Victoria's.

*I think it's time the three of us sat down like adults.

I'm willing to apologize to Elena in person.

This has gone far enough.*

I showed it to Carol through the glass door.

She stepped out, read it, and handed the phone back.

"Do not respond," she said.

"Forward it to me."

"What does it mean that she's reaching out directly?"

Carol looked at the phone for a moment.

"It means her lawyer told her the CPS report landed and she's scared." She almost smiled.

"Good."

I forwarded the message and put my phone in my pocket.

That afternoon, a CPS investigator named Mr.

Okafor called to schedule a home visit.

He was professional and calm and asked me to have Elena available to speak with him the following day.

"She'll be here," I said.

"She's been very clear about what happened.

She'll tell you herself."

"That's helpful," he said.

"Children her age are often reliable reporters when the environment is supportive."

"It is."

After I hung up, Elena came into the kitchen and asked if she could have an apple.

"Of course," I said.

She took it and went back to her movie without another word.

I stood at the counter and thought about Victoria's text.

*Willing to apologize.* Not *I was wrong.* Not *I hurt her.* Willing to apologize.

Like it was a concession she was offering.

Like she was still in charge of the terms.

She had been in charge of the terms for a long time.

That was ending now.

My phone buzzed again.

This time it was Julian.

*Victoria wants to meet.

I think you should hear her out before this gets worse.*

I set the phone face-down on the counter.

May you like

It was already worse.

He just didn't know how much worse yet.
