Chapter 2: The Woman Who Came Back

I read Walter's letter three times.
My hands wouldn't stop shaking.
He knew.
He had known for years that someone in our own family was planning to take everything from me the moment he was gone.
That someone was his sister, Ruth.
The letter said Ruth had been quietly pressuring Walter for over a decade to cut me out of the estate.
She told him I had been unfaithful.
That I had a secret he didn't know about.
That I didn't deserve what he had built.
Walter wrote: *"I never believed her.
But I knew if I left everything to you openly, she would find a way to challenge the will and drag you through years of pain.
So I made a different plan."*
I sat in that lawyer's office with the letter pressed against my chest, trying to breathe.
Then the door opened.
Ruth walked in.
She looked at me, then at the envelope in my hands, and her expression shifted — just for a second.
Something cold crossed her face before she smiled.
"Eleanor," she said sweetly.
"Still here?
I thought you'd want to go home and rest."
She didn't know I had read the letter.
And I realized, right then, that she had come back to make sure I hadn't.
