Chapter 2: The Party That Ended at Nine

Three vehicles.

A locksmith's van.

A constable's car.

And Harrison's black sedan.

Julian's drink stopped halfway to his mouth.

Harrison stepped out first, briefcase in hand, and walked straight past Julian without looking at him.

"Ms.

Natalie," he said.

"We're ready."

Julian found his voice.

"What is this?"

"A property enforcement notice," Harrison said.

"Signed this afternoon by a Travis County judge."

He held out a single page.

Julian didn't take it.

"You had four hours," I said.

"You threw a party instead."

Khloe appeared in the doorway behind him, a champagne glass in her hand.

When she saw the constable, the glass tilted.

Champagne ran over her fingers.

"You can't do this tonight," she said.

"We have guests inside."

"You have twenty minutes to collect personal belongings," the constable said.

"Anything left after that stays with the property."

Julian stepped closer to me and dropped his voice.

"You really want to do this to your own family?"

I looked at him.

"You made my mother scrub your patio on her knees.

Don't talk to me about family."

He had nothing left.

Then Khloe said something I didn't expect.

Something that made Harrison go very still.

Something that changed what I thought I already knew.
