Chapter 2: What Was Waiting When He Came Home

Julian came back on a Sunday.
He walked through the front door with a tan and a carry-on bag, and stopped when he saw my mother sitting in his chair.
"Where's Evelyn?"
My mother looked at him for a long moment.
"She's not here, Julian."
"What do you mean she's not here?
Where is she?"
"She's recovering." Her voice was flat.
"From the surgery.
After she nearly bl\*d out.
Alone."
Julian set his bag down slowly.
"Maya told me it was handled—"
"Your son is g\*ne." My mother stood up.
"Daniel is g\*ne.
And your wife signed the divorce papers two days ago from a hospital bed."
The color left his face.
He pulled out his phone.
Called me.
I did not answer.
He called again.
Then again.
On the fourth call, he left a voicemail.
His voice cracked twice.
I listened to it once, then deleted it.
What Julian didn't know yet was what waited for him Monday morning.
The board meeting was already scheduled.
The proxy had already been revoked.
And one board member — someone Julian had trusted completely for years — had quietly handed our outside counsel a folder.
Inside that folder were emails.
Emails that proved the Napa trip wasn't the first time.
It wasn't even the fifth.
