Chapter 2: The Man Who Was Already There
Bianca didn't move.
The man stepped closer.
He was older, well-dressed.
Not a thief.
"Who are you?" she asked.
"Someone who's been watching you since you walked into that restaurant tonight." He tilted his head.
"That was careless, Bianca."
"Get out."
"You used the Vale name.
You let him see your face." He reached into his jacket and placed something on the counter.
A phone.
Her photo on the screen.
Taken inside the restaurant.
"You were being watched before Adrian ever noticed you."
Her throat tightened.
"Who sent you?"
He smiled.
"The same people who arranged the accident fourteen years ago." He paused.
"They're still here.
Still protecting the same interests."
"My brother has more power than any of them now."
"Your brother doesn't remember you." His voice stayed calm.
"And if you contact him again, the next accident won't leave survivors."
Bianca's hand found the edge of the counter.
"You can't—"
"We already have someone inside his organization." He picked up the phone and slid it back into his pocket.
"One call.
That's all it takes."
He walked toward the door.
"Leave the city by morning."
He was almost gone when Bianca spoke.
"He already sent someone to find me."
The man stopped.
Slowly turned.
For the first time, something shifted behind his eyes.
Not anger.
Fear.
