Chapter 2: The Envelope With Someone Else's Fingerprints

Arthur went completely still.
The keys were still on the counter.
Frank hadn't moved.
Even Claire had stopped pretending to wipe down the coffee machine.
"Say that name again," Arthur said quietly.
Leo looked up at him without fear.
"Sarah Harrison.
She said if anything ever happened to her, I had to find you."
Arthur crouched down slowly until he was eye level with the boy.
His voice dropped to almost nothing.
"Where is your mother right now, son?"
Leo reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small folded envelope.
The edges were worn, like it had been carried for a long time.
He held it out with both hands.
"She told me to give you this.
She said you'd know what to do."
Arthur took the envelope.
His name was written on the front in handwriting he recognized immediately.
His hands were not steady.
Frank started to say something.
Arthur silenced him with one look.
He turned the envelope over.
It had already been opened.
Someone else had read it first.
Arthur looked back at Leo.
"Who else knows you came here tonight?"
The boy hesitated — just for a second — and that second said everything.
