Chapter 2: He Chose the Restaurant

PART 2 ⬇️

The whole restaurant went quiet.

Richard opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

"Richard." My voice was steady, but my hands were shaking.

"Answer me.

Who is she?"

The woman crossed her arms.

"Tell her, Richard.

Or I will."

"Diane—" His voice came out low, almost like a warning.

Diane.

He knew her name without being told.

The man beside her — the one who'd been sitting at my table all evening — stepped back slightly.

Like he didn't want to be part of what was coming.

Richard finally looked at me.

"Martha, it's not what you think."

"Then explain it to me.

Because from where I'm standing, you lied about being at work, you came to a restaurant you weren't supposed to know about, and you walked straight to her."

He said nothing.

Diane tilted her head.

"He didn't just know about the restaurant, Martha."

Something in her tone made my stomach turn.

"He chose it."

I looked at Richard.

His jaw tightened.

"Diane, stop."

"Why?" She almost smiled.

"She deserves to know."

I felt the floor shift under me.

Because suddenly I realized — the screaming over the table, the texts telling Richard to stay away, the smile she kept giving me all night.

She hadn't been trying to ruin my evening.

She'd been trying to protect something.

And I had no idea what.

What Martha found out next shattered everything she thought she knew.
