The air between us felt like it stopped moving.
"The woman you told me about?" I said.
"Max.
What does that mean?"
He opened his mouth.
Closed it.
The woman took a small step back.
For the first time since the café, she looked genuinely uncomfortable.
"I didn't know," she said quietly.
"He never told me he was married."
Everything in my chest dropped.
"Excuse me?"
Max held up both hands.
"It's not what you think.
She's a colleague.
I mentioned I had a wife and daughter — that's all."
"Then why did she walk straight to your car like she knew exactly which one it was?"
Silence.
Lily was still holding my hand.
I squeezed it once and looked at her.
"Go wait by the door, sweetheart."
She didn't move right away.
She looked up at Max with an expression I never wanted to see on my seven-year-old's face.
Then she walked to the café entrance and stood with her back to us.
I turned back to Max.
"How does she know your car?"
He looked at the woman.
She looked at the ground.
That was answer enough.
"Max." My voice came out steadier than I felt.
"How long?"
He didn't answer.
But she did.
"He said you two were already over."
