Chapter 2: The Name on the Envelope

The manager set the box on the counter without a word.

The cashier's hands were shaking as she lifted the lid.

Inside was a stack of old photographs.

She pulled one out and held it up next to Mom's face.

Her voice broke.

"I knew it.

I knew it was you."

Mom stared at the photo.

"Where did you get that?"

"You don't remember me, do you?" the cashier whispered.

"Thirty-one years ago.

The shelter on Deerfield Road.

You were the only volunteer who stayed through the whole winter."

The rude woman behind us made a noise.

"This is ridiculous.

I'm calling corporate."

Nobody looked at her.

The manager cleared his throat.

"Ma'am," he said, turning to Mom, "we've been trying to find you for three years."

"Find me?" Mom touched the edge of the photograph.

"Why?"

He reached into the box and pulled out an envelope.

It was sealed.

Thick.

Official-looking.

"Because someone left instructions," he said quietly.

"And your name is on it."

Mom's face went pale.

"What kind of instructions?"

He didn't answer right away.

He just looked at the cashier.

And the cashier looked at the envelope.

Then she said six words that made my heart stop.

"Margaret, you need to open that."
