Maureen lifted the lid with both hands.

Inside was a folded piece of paper, a small photograph, and an old employee badge.

She picked up the photograph and held it toward my mother.

"Is this you?"

Mom leaned forward.

Her face went still.

"Where did you get that?"

"It was left here," Maureen said quietly.

Estelle.

He said —"

Mom's breath caught.

"Gerald."

Her voice was barely a whisper.

Maureen unfolded the piece of paper slowly and placed it on the counter between them.

Mom stared at it.

Then she sat down — right there, beside the register — and covered her mouth with both hands.

"He waited," she said.

"All this time.

He actually waited."

I had never heard that name before in my life.
