Chapter 2: The Families Never Stopped Looking

Dad's grip on the pilot's wrist was firm for an 81-year-old man.

"Before we go through that door," Dad said quietly, "I need to know how you recognized me."

The pilot looked shaken.

"Sir, your photo is still on the wall."

"What wall?" I asked.

Neither of them answered me.

The security supervisor stepped closer and lowered his voice.

"Ma'am, your father needs to come with us.

There are people who have been waiting a long time for this."

"Waiting for what?

He's here for a wedding."

Dad finally let go of the pilot's wrist.

He straightened slowly, and something in his face shifted — something I had never seen before.

Not the quiet, gentle man who made me pancakes on Sundays.

Something older.

Steadier.

"How many are still here?" Dad asked the pilot.

"Three.

The other two passed last year."

Dad closed his eyes for a moment.

Behind us, the woman in the expensive suit was still watching.

Her smirk was gone now.

She looked confused and, for the first time, uncertain.

Then the supervisor's radio crackled.

A voice came through clearly.

"Tell him the families never stopped looking."

Dad's hand tightened around his cane.

He turned to me, and his eyes were wet.

"There's something I should have told you a long time ago."
