Chapter 2: The Envelope With Her Name On It

Evelyn was on her feet before I finished the sentence.

"What men?" she grabbed my hands.

"Tell me exactly what she said."

"She said they'd been following us for three days.

She said if anything happened to her, I had to find you.

She said you'd know what to do."

Evelyn turned to a tall man standing near the entrance.

"Richard.

Now."

He was already moving.

Two security guards pushed through the ballroom doors into the wet Manhattan night.

I tried to follow but Evelyn held me back.

"Stay with me."

A minute passed.

Then another.

Then Richard appeared in the doorway.

His face said everything before his mouth did.

"Mrs.

Whitmore.

There's a woman on the pavement outside.

She's unconscious.

An ambulance is on the way."

The room went completely silent.

Evelyn made a sound I will never forget.

She turned to me slowly, like she was afraid of what she'd see in my eyes.

I already knew.

"That's my mom," I said.

Evelyn pulled me close again, but this time her hands were shaking.

"She's going to be okay," she whispered.

But over my shoulder, I heard Richard say one more thing — quietly, only to the guard beside him.

"There was a man.

He ran when he saw us coming.

But he dropped something."

He held up a small envelope.

On the front, in dark ink, was Evelyn's name.
