Chapter 2: The Envelope and the Enemy

My hands were shaking as I read the letter.
Thomas hadn't chosen me by accident.
He had known exactly who I was from the very first day.
The letter explained everything.
Thomas had been watching me visit my mom for weeks before he ever dropped that cup.
He had seen how I spoke to her.
How I held her hand.
How I never once looked at my phone while I was with her.
He wrote: *"I watched you with your mother, Sarah, and I saw the daughter I lost.
Not because you look like her.
But because you love the way she used to love — before everything went wrong between us."*
I had to sit down on the hospital bench outside.
The nurse sat beside me quietly.
Then she said: "There's something else you should know.
His daughter — his real daughter — she was here.
Last night.
She came to the hospital after he was already gone."
I looked up.
"She came?"
The nurse nodded slowly.
"She read the will.
And when she found out what Thomas had left you…"
She paused.
"Sarah, she's already spoken to a lawyer."
My stomach dropped.
I looked back down at the letter in my hands — and noticed for the first time that there was a second page I hadn't unfolded yet.
