Chapter 2: The Name He Wasn't Supposed to Know

Ryan didn't flinch.

He looked straight up at Daniel — eyes red, jaw tight — and said it again.

"Dad.

It's me.

It's Ryan."

The room went completely still.

Claire looked up from the floor, still holding Lily against her chest.

"What did he just say?"

Daniel stepped back.

His hand dropped to his side.

"I don't know this boy," he said.

But his voice had changed.

Lower.

Careful.

Ryan's lip trembled.

"You came to my school once.

You brought me a blue backpack.

You told me not to tell anyone."

Claire slowly stood up.

She turned to face Daniel.

"What is he talking about?"

Daniel shook his head.

"He's confused.

He's just a kid—"

"You have a photo," Ryan said.

"In your wallet.

Me and you.

At the park."

The silence that followed was the loudest thing in the room.

Claire's eyes dropped to Daniel's jacket pocket.

Daniel didn't move.

He didn't reach for his wallet.

He didn't say a word.

And that was the moment Claire understood that the boy standing in her living room wasn't a stranger to her husband at all.
