Chapter 1: The Bracelet That Should Have Been Buried

A STRANGER WORE THE BRACELET I MADE FOR MY D\*AD BABY — THEN I SAW MY HUSBAND HOLDING HER IN A 1994 PHOTO
A young woman reached across our restaurant table to shake my hand.
I never touched it.
I couldn't stop staring at the bracelet on her wrist.
"Where did you get that?"
"My mother gave it to me."
I asked her mother's name.
"Mara Collins."
My husband Charles went completely still.
I asked to see the inside of the bracelet.
The engraving was still there:
M.E.
— 1994
I had those initials engraved more than thirty years ago.
For my newborn daughter.
Mara.
The daughter I had been told p@ssed away the day she was born.
Then the woman said:
"My mom was adopted."
I looked at Charles.
He wouldn't meet my eyes.
Then Anna reached into her handbag and placed an old photograph on the table.
My husband.
Thirty years younger.
Standing outside a maternity home.
Holding my newborn daughter.
I asked him:
"Why are you holding my baby?"
He couldn't answer.
Anna told me her mother had kept that photograph her entire life because:
"She said the man in it knew why she was given away."
Charles finally said:
"You don't know the whole story."
But then Anna mentioned something else.
There was another person in the original photograph.
Before she could unfold it, Charles suddenly said:
"Anna, don't."
That's when I realized something.
He already knew what the second photograph showed.
I looked at the man I'd been married to for more than thirty years.
And asked:
"How do you know what's in that photograph?"
