Chapter 2: The Chalk Bucket

By 7:55, there were eleven kids in that circle.
Chalk everywhere.
Bikes.
A basketball bouncing off the pavement.
The Patel twins were already running laps around the cul-de-sac shrieking like it was Christmas morning.
It was a Saturday.
It was a public street.

She walked straight to me.
"You organized this."

"This is harassment."
"It's a Saturday morning on a public street, Brooke."
Her jaw tightened.
"Walter will hear about this."
I said, "I think Walter already knows."
She turned — and Walter was sitting in his chair.
Right there on the porch.
Watching.
He didn't say anything.
But he reached down beside his chair and set something on the top step.
The chalk bucket.
Brooke went very still.
Then she said something I didn't expect — quietly, so only I could hear it.
"You have no idea what you just started."
She went back inside.
The door didn't slam.
That was almost worse.
---
What did Brooke mean by that?
And why did Walter wait until that exact moment to bring the bucket back out?
