Chapter 2: The Medallion That Should Not Exist

Part 2 ⬇️

I followed Beatrice six blocks through the cold before she stopped.

Not at an apartment building.

Not at a shelter.

She stopped at an alley behind St.

Dominic's Church — and knocked three times on a rusted metal door.

A boy opened it.

Maybe nine years old.

Thin coat.

Hollow eyes.

He saw the container and his whole face changed.

"You got the good stuff tonight," he whispered.

Beatrice pulled him close and held him like she was afraid someone would take him.

"I always will," she said.

"No matter what."

I pressed myself against the wall and watched.

Then an older woman appeared in the doorway behind the boy.

White hair.

Bent posture.

And around her neck — a silver medallion I recognized instantly.

My chest went cold.

That medallion hadn't been seen in twelve years.

I had personally ordered the search called off.

I had been told there was nothing left to find.

The woman looked out into the dark alley — and for one second, her eyes moved in my direction.

I didn't breathe.

Then she pulled the boy inside and closed the door.

I stood in the freezing street, unable to move.

Because the woman in that doorway was supposed to be d\*ad.

And the only person who could have told me otherwise had been standing next to me all along — smiling.

What Beatrice was really protecting — and what Lorenzo had been hiding for twelve years — is darker than anyone expected.
