Chapter 2: There's Another One

Part 2 ⬇️

I walked straight to my car with Chloe in my arms.

Barbara followed us down the driveway.

"You are overreacting.

She is a child.

Children need boundaries."

"She was barefoot.

Outside.

In the dark."

"She was being dramatic."

I stopped walking and turned around.

"How many times, Barbara?"

She didn't answer.

"How many times has my daughter been locked outside while I wasn't home?"

Still nothing.

Then my husband spoke from the doorway.

"It was only a few times.

Mom was just trying to help."

A few times.

I looked down at Chloe.

She was gripping my jacket with both hands, her face pressed against my shoulder.

I looked back at him.

"She stopped asking me to stay home with her.

I thought she was just getting used to the visits."

My voice broke on that last word.

She hadn't been getting used to anything.

She had been too scared to tell me.

I opened the car door and buckled Chloe in.

When I stood up, Barbara was right behind me.

"If you leave with that card, you will regret it."

I looked at her calmly.

"I already do.

Just not for the reason you think."

Then Chloe tugged my sleeve.

"Mommy…

there's another one."
