Chapter 2: The Photograph He Recognized

The groom's hands were shaking.

He stepped away from the altar — away from the bride — and walked slowly toward the little girl.

"What is your name?" he whispered.

"Lily," she said.

"And this is Mia."

The baby had stopped crying.

She was staring up at the groom with his own eyes.

The bride grabbed his arm.

"Don't you dare.

This is a trick.

Someone sent them here to ruin us."

But Lily reached into the front pocket of her dirty dress and pulled out a folded photograph.

"Mama told me to give you this.

She said you would remember."

The groom unfolded it with trembling fingers.

The room watched him go completely still.

Whatever was in that photograph — he recognized it immediately.

"Where is your mother?" he asked quietly.

"Where is she right now?"

Lily's lip trembled.

"She's in the hospital.

She said…

she said she might not come home."

A gasp moved through the crowd.

The bride took one step back.

Then another.

And that's when an older woman near the front row — the groom's own mother — slowly rose from her seat.

Her face was not shocked.

Her face was guilty.

She had seen that photograph before.
