Chapter 2: Someone Who Knew You'd Eventually Ask

Lily looked up at him with those eyes — his eyes — and said simply, "Because Mama cried all night and I didn't know what else to do."

Dominic said nothing.

He rang the bell.

For a long moment, nothing happened.

Then footsteps.

Fast ones.

The door flew open and Sophia Carter stood there in a worn grey sweater, her face white with panic — until she saw Lily.

Until she saw *him*.

The colour didn't come back.

"Lily." Her voice was barely a sound.

"Get inside."

"Mama, I—"

"Inside.

Now."

Lily slipped past her, still clutching the rabbit.

Sophia didn't move.

She kept her eyes on Dominic like he was something dangerous standing on her doorstep.

He was.

He always had been.

"Whatever she told you," Sophia said quietly, "forget it.

We're fine."

"You're not fine."

"Don't." One word.

Hard as a door closing.

Dominic looked at her.

Six years.

She was thinner.

There were shadows under her eyes that hadn't been there before.

But her chin was up.

Still up.

"Sophia.

I didn't fire you."

Something crossed her face.

Not relief.

Something worse.

"I know," she said.

He went still.

"Then who did?"

She opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Glanced once over her shoulder toward the hallway where Lily had gone.

Then she looked back at him, and for the first time, he saw it.

She wasn't just tired.

She was afraid.

"You should go, Dominic."

"Who fired you, Sophia?"

Her hand tightened on the door frame.

"Someone who knew," she whispered, "that you'd eventually ask that question."
