Chapter 2: The Envelope in Her Handwriting

Part 2 ⬇️
My heart was pounding.
Around us, people were still hugging and wiping their eyes, but I couldn't hear any of it anymore.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Where did you take her?"
Connor looked down at his hands.
"She made me promise not to tell you while she was alive.
But she's gone now, and you deserve to know."
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small folded envelope.
My name was written on the front in Mom's handwriting.
My hands were shaking as I took it.
"Every week," Connor said quietly, "she asked me to drive her to the same place.
She never missed it.
Not once."
"What place?" I whispered.
He hesitated.
"A cemetery on the other side of town.
One you've never been to."
I stared at him.
"Why would she go there?
Everyone we lost is buried here."
Connor's jaw tightened.
He nodded toward the envelope.
"Open it," he said.
"She wrote it all down.
But I have to warn you — what's in there is going to change how you see your whole family."
I looked at the envelope in my hands.
Mom's careful handwriting.
Her familiar loops and curves.
Whatever was inside, she had chosen not to tell me herself.
And now I understood why.
