Chapter 2: The Letter That Started With Sorry

My hands were shaking so badly I had to set the pages down.

The letter didn't start with "thank you." It started with: *"Sarah, I need you to forgive me for what I'm about to tell you."*

I read that line three times before I could move on.

Larry wasn't who I thought he was.

He wasn't a stranger who had fallen on hard times.

He had been watching me — specifically me — for months before he ever said a word.

He wrote it plainly, without shame: *"I chose you because I knew you wouldn't say no.

I knew what kind of person you were.

I'm sorry I used that against you."*

I pushed back from the table.

My chair scraped the floor so hard my neighbor knocked on the wall.

Used me.

He had used me.

But then I turned the page — and my breath stopped completely.

There was a name written at the top.

A lawyer's name.

An address on the other side of the city.

And one single sentence beneath it:

*"Go see him before they do.

Don't wait.

Your name is already on everything."*

Everything.

What everything?

Before I could reach for my phone, someone knocked on my front door.
