The first page was an apology.
Larry wrote that he was sorry.
That he had lied to me.
Not with cruel intentions — but with a secret he had carried for over thirty years.
My hands wouldn't stop shaking as I turned to the second page.
He wasn't just a homeless man.
He had a son.
A grown son named Daniel — who had spent years searching for him.
Larry had walked away from his family when Daniel was four years old.
He wrote that he believed they were better off without him.
That he had made too many mistakes.
That he didn't deserve to be found.
But Daniel had found him anyway.
Three months before Larry held up that sign, Daniel had located him at the shelter.
He had begged his father to come home.
To meet his grandchildren.
To let the family heal.
Larry had refused.
He wrote: *"I told Daniel I was already g0ne.
That there was nothing left to come home to."*
Then came the sentence that made me set the pages down.
*"But Daniel didn't give up, Sarah.
He hired a lawyer.
And the moment I married you — he filed a legal challenge."*
My phone buzzed on the table.
Unknown number.
I almost didn't answer.
But something made me pick it up.
A man's voice said quietly: "Sarah?
My name is Daniel.
We need to talk about my father's estate — and what he never told you about who he really was."
