Chapter 2: Someone at the Door

Vincent didn't look away from Arthur.
"You searched the estate," he said quietly.
"After my father's funeral.
For weeks.
I was grieving and you told me you were handling paperwork."
Arthur's jaw tightened.
"I was protecting the family's assets.
That is my job."
"That's not what I asked."
Clara leaned forward across the counter, her voice dropping low.
Clara: There is a lockbox, Vincent.
Your grandfather hid it before he d\*ed.
Your mother knew what was inside it.
That key is the only one that opens it.
Arthur's hand moved toward his jacket pocket — just slightly.
Just enough.
Vincent caught it.
Vincent: Don't.
The two security guards near the door turned at the sound of his voice.
Arthur stopped.
His face had gone from pale to grey.
Clara: She made me promise to find you someday.
She said if anything ever happened to her again, you needed to know the truth about how your father d\*ed.
The diner went completely silent.
Vincent felt the key grow heavier in his hand.
Vincent: What do you mean — how my father d\*ed?
Clara opened her mouth to answer.

Then her eyes moved to something just past Vincent's shoulder — and she stopped breathing.
Someone had just walked through the diner door.
