Chapter 1: The Night They Left More Than a Bill
A couple ordered a $400 dinner and slipped out without paying, so my manager made me cover their bill — the next morning, he handed me something they'd left behind and said, "I think you need to see this."
Have you ever thought about how $400 can be one person's casual dinner and someone else's groceries, bills, and basically their lifeline for the month?
That's pretty much where I'm at right now.
I'm still in school, I help support my family financially, and waitressing at an upscale restaurant is how I've been keeping everything together.
The money can be decent, but the people?
You get all kinds.
Some are absolute sweethearts, and others treat you like you're invisible.
A few nights ago, I was serving this well-dressed couple who ordered whatever they wanted without even glancing at the prices.
Steaks, appetizers, cocktails, an expensive bottle of wine — the whole thing.
Their bill was just over $400.
The guy asked for the check, so I dropped it off and moved to another table.
When I came back a few minutes later, the booth was empty.
So was the payment tray.
They'd ditched me with a $400 bill.
I went straight to my manager, Jett, but instead of checking the cameras, he told me I had to cover it because it was my table.
I was furious.
That wasn't "dinner money" to me.
That was money my family and I actually needed.
But the next morning, something really strange happened.
Jett called me before my shift and told me to come in as soon as possible.
Apparently, while cleaning after closing, someone had found something wedged deep behind the couple's booth.
It wasn't cash or a forgotten wallet.
The second I stepped through the restaurant door, Jett came straight toward me.
He looked genuinely shaken, which was nothing like the guy who'd barely cared about what had happened the night before.
Before I could even ask what was going on, he said softly, "I think you need to see this."
