Chapter 6: The Offer He Shouldn't Have Made

Three days passed.

Grace filed the formal complaint on a Tuesday.

By Wednesday afternoon, Edward called to tell me the licensing board had upgraded the file to an active investigation.

By Thursday morning, I had a voicemail I didn't recognize.

The number was local.

The voice was Christopher's.

"This is Christopher Fenton.

I'd like to speak with you privately, if possible.

I think there's been some misunderstanding about what happened the other day, and I'd like the chance to explain.

I can make things right.

Please call me back."

I played it twice.

Then I called Grace.

"Don't call him back," she said, before I'd finished describing the message.

"Don't speak to him at all.

Forward me the voicemail."

"He said he wants to make things right."

"He wants to know what you've already told us." A pause.

"Forward it.

It may be useful."

I forwarded it and put my phone down.

Benny was on the sofa beside me, turned toward the window the way he always did in the afternoon, as if he could still see the light.

The call came again that evening.

I let it go to voicemail.

"I know you've spoken to Edward Lowe.

I know what he's told you about Victoria.

But there are things he doesn't know — things about their relationship, about what she actually wanted.

I have letters.

I have her own words.

If you go forward with this, you're going to hurt people she loved.

Please.

Call me back."

I sat with that for a long time.

Then I forwarded it to Grace and called Edward.

"He says he has letters from Victoria," I told him.

"He says there are things you don't know."

Edward was quiet for a moment.

"He has one letter," he said.

"Victoria wrote it during a period when her condition was worsening.

It's affectionate.

It thanks him for his care.

He showed it to her attorney when the estate was being reviewed." Another pause.

"Her attorney noted that it was written four months after the document transfer.

After she had already signed everything over.

After she had already lost the building." His voice was steady.

"He kept her warm while he emptied her pockets.

And now he wants to use her words to protect himself."

I didn't say anything.

"He's frightened," Edward said.

"Frightened people make mistakes.

Let him keep calling."

The third call came the next morning, and this time the tone had changed.

"I've been very patient.

I've tried to reach you reasonably.

If you continue with this complaint, I will have no choice but to pursue legal action for defamation.

What you told the licensing board is false and damaging, and I have counsel prepared to act.

Think carefully about whether this is worth it for you.

You're a seventy-four-year-old woman on a fixed income.

I don't think you want this kind of trouble."

My hand tightened on the phone.

I forwarded the voicemail to Grace.

Then I sat down at the kitchen table and wrote out every word of it from memory, with the time and date, and emailed it to her as well.

She called back within the hour.

"That third message," she said, "is the best thing he could have done for our case."

"He threatened me."

"He threatened a named witness in an active licensing investigation.

That is a separate matter entirely, and I will be filing an addendum this afternoon." Her voice was crisp and precise and deeply satisfied.

"He's panicking.

Panicking people stop thinking clearly." A brief pause.

"How are you?"

"Angry," I said.

"Good," Grace said.

"Stay angry.

It's useful."

After I hung up, I sat with Benny for a long time.

He had climbed into my lap without being invited, the way he sometimes did when the apartment felt too quiet.

His cloudy eyes were closed.

His breathing was slow and even.

I thought about Victoria, writing a warm letter to a man who had already taken everything from her.

Thanking him for his kindness.

Not knowing.

"She loved you," I told Benny.

May you like

He pressed closer.

Outside, the afternoon light moved across the floor, slow and indifferent, the way it always did.
