Chapter 2: What Was Found in the Car

I couldn't move.
This boy — bruised, barefoot, shaking — knew my brother's name.
"Evan." I knelt down to his level.
"When did you last see Daniel?"
He wiped his face with the back of his hand.
"He used to visit me and Mom on Sundays.
Then one Sunday he didn't come.
Ryan said he left.
But I heard them fighting the night before."
Ryan's jaw tightened against the wall.
"That's enough."
"What were they fighting about?" I asked.
Evan looked at Ryan.
Then back at me.
His voice dropped to almost nothing.
"Ryan said Daniel knew too much."
The room went completely still.
I stood up slowly and faced Ryan.
"Too much about what?"
He said nothing.
Just stared at the floor.
One of my officers stepped forward.
"We found something in his car.
Thought it was nothing at first." He held up a sealed evidence bag.
Inside was a photograph.
Daniel.
Standing in front of a house I didn't recognize.
Smiling.
And written on the back in handwriting I knew better than my own —
*If I don't make it, give this to my brother.*
Ryan's eyes locked onto that photograph.
And for the first time since he walked through that door, he looked genuinely afraid.
