Chapter 2: What the Camera Remembered
Richard held Sophie tighter and forced his voice to stay calm.
"Baby.
What did you say?"
Sophie pressed her face into his chest.
"Vivienne said…
if I told you anything…
she'd send me away.
She said you don't really love me.
She said I'm not your real daughter."
The room went silent.
Richard pulled back just enough to look at her face.
"Who told you that, sweetheart?"
"Vivienne.
And her friend.
They were laughing."
He stood up slowly.
His hands were shaking.
He walked to the kitchen counter and saw it — a single plate of food, covered and set aside.
A sticky note on top.
*For the dog.

Richard turned it over.
On the back, in the same handwriting:
*She eats when she behaves.*
He couldn't breathe.
He pulled out his phone.
Checked the house camera app.
The footage loaded.
And what he saw made his bl00d run c0ld.
