Chapter 2: The Ring That Should Have Been Lost

**— PART 2 —**
Natalie held Madison's arm with both hands.
"You're not going anywhere."
Madison twisted hard.
"Get off me.
You have no right—"
"My sister is g\*ne and you were her best friend." Natalie's voice cracked.
"You stay."
Adrian pulled the cedar panel open.
The smell of cedar and something older drifted out.
On the shelf sat a red Cartier case.
Exactly where Claire had always kept it.
Adrian's hand shook as he lifted it.
He opened the lid.
Claire's wedding ring rested inside — the oval diamond she had never taken off in eleven years of marriage.
The ring the police said was g\*ne.
The ring Madison had told him was lost in the crash.
Rachel made a small sound and pulled Emma close.
Margaret said nothing.
Her silence was its own confession.
Adrian turned slowly.
"She didn't d\*e in that crash with her ring missing."
He looked directly at Madison.
"Someone took it off her finger before she got in that car."
Madison stopped struggling.
The color left her face completely.
Then Emma spoke from behind Rachel's arm.
"The blue lady was crying that night too."
Everyone turned to the little girl.
"She was on the phone," Emma whispered.
"She said — *it's already done.*"
Madison's knees buckled.
Natalie caught her — not out of kindness.
"What did you do?" Natalie whispered.
"What did you do to Claire?"
Madison opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Then Adrian's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
Chicago area code.
He answered.
A woman's voice.
Quiet.
Careful.
"Mr.
Westwood…
I've been waiting three years to make this call."

What that caller revealed next exposed a secret Madison had paid to keep buried.
